White fur and skin-crimps hatch from the corners of his shy eyes. He runs a spare bolt over his knuckles, ready to fix a wanting chromeling for the thousandth and first time rather than chat with another person.
Aloysius is a member of the Barathrumites and an inhabitant of Grit Gate.[1]
Character
Aloysius is a reclusive Barathrumite who tends to the crops, chromelings, and machinery of Grit Gate. He does not enjoy speaking to "organics", as it is "as strenuous to [him] as any physical exercise". He states that this is not due to "antipathy" on his part, but that he is simply unable to communicate as easily as others, and that he doesn't wish to learn how to. However, he does seem to regard organic lifeforms with a certain distaste, calling the Mechanimists who inhabit Bethesda Susa an "infestation", referring to Asphodel, Earl of Omonporch as "a self-important churl", and saying that he "prefer[s] fungi edible and inert" when discussing Pax Klanq.
Aloysius prefers the company of inorganic and non-sapient life, principally his crops and the chromelings of Grit Gate, whom he refers to as his "children". He also shares a bond with Ereshkigal, and claims that he feels as though they understand eachother.
Hortensa refers to Aloysius as a "prickly troglodyte", and claims to have shared honey with him "for more years than [she] can count". She says that she "can't help but like him", and claims "while he won't admit it, he feels the same" about her.
Wares
Aloysius stocks a small amount of food items, presumably which he has harvested from his crops. He does not restock.[2]

Combat
Aloysius will begin neutral to the player but will become hostile if the player attacks him or any Barathrumites within view of him. He can also become hostile if the player's reputation with the Barathrumites falls low enough, or if the player is seen stealing their belongings or damaging their property.
Equipment
Aloysius always comes equipped with a freeze ray, slotted with a chem cell at 100% charge. He will never list this item when trading with the player.[3] Additionally, he comes equipped with an umber frock and a pair of sandals.[2]
Skills
Aloysius possesses the Bow and Rifle skill, which will additionally grant him the Draw a Bead and Steady Hands skills. The latter will increase his accuracy when using his freeze ray.[3]
Mutations
Being an urshiib, Aloysius possesses the Albino (D) mutation, the Quills mutation at level 6, and the Triple-jointed mutation at level 3.[3] Quills provides Aloysius with damage reflection, immunity to the quills of other creatures, and the "Quill Fling" activated ability, which allows Aloysius to fire a portion of his quills to deal damage to adjacent creatures. He will also possess quills, natural equipment worn on his body that can't be removed, providing him with an additional 4 AV. Triple-jointed will grant Aloysius an additional 3 Agility.
Self Preservation
If Aloysius's hitpoints fall below 85% of his maximum, he will cease combat and will begin to actively flee from threats.[4]

Caution: This article or section contains unverified speculation and should not be considered canonical. |
- Perhaps the most famous bear named Aloysius is the teddy bear brought to Oxford by Sebastian Flyte in Evelyn Waugh's Brideshead Revisted. That Aloysius was modeled on Archibald Ormsby-Gore, the bear brought to Magdalen by John Betjeman, Waugh's college friend and future Poet Laureate.[5]
- Though Aloysius can be asked about Bethesda Susa, they can't normally be met until after the baetyl in the Temple of the Rock has been interacted with.
