Esbear

Though bipedal and clad in robe and sandal, this is no Urshiib. With no quills or technical expertise to speak of, this ursine companion's talents lie in his inexplicable force of ego. Power shines behind his eyes, albeit in the absence of substantial intellect.

Perfect

Esbear has an exceptional mind for a bear, although this may not count for much among other humanoids.

Discussed in his recalled story, Esbear has the Mental Mirror mutation, made more effective by his Willpower-boosted MA. His other mutation, Mental Blast, is a deprecated version of Sunder Mind[citation needed] that is used nowhere else in the game.[1]

Esbear is not a member of the Bears faction, nor does he fight with bite or claw, something he explains is a personal choice. He is also not of the Esper morphotype;[2] in Qud, the term "esper" is sometimes used to refer to those with prominent mental mutations rather than those limited to them.

Esbear appears to be able to hear the Elder Cant. Though he maintains his own thoughts and desires, a constant distraction could explain the frequent pauses in his speech.

Recall Story

Espers, Starapples, and Honey

Oh. Yes.

I thought you should know? That there is a powerful esper. On the other side of that door.

I will go first. To reflect the attack.

Then we can camp, and... ah. I am thinking about starapples and honey. I would like you to cook that, when we make camp. Yes?

Hm? Oh. Yes. The powerful esper. I will go and kill them.

And then. Starapples and honey.

Trivia

  • A creature known as a talking bear exists in the game's code.[3] Similar to Agate Severance Star, talking bears do not normally appear anywhere in the game, but can be brought into existence using wishes or a box of nanocrayons. Talking bears are docile member of the Bears faction, and while they use the same tile as urshiib tinkers, they are otherwise distinct from urshiib. Esbear does not inherit his object blueprints from talking bears, or any other bear,[4] instead being a basic humanoid with ursine characteristics manually applied. However, Esbear and talking bears have shared lines of dialogue. Esbear's version of these lines add the frequent pauses seen in his unique dialogue.
