This guide will walk you through the entire main questline of Caves of Qud.

Beginning the main questline

There are three ways to begin the main questline, but they all involve taking a data disk to Grit Gate. The method you use depends on which start you choose at the beginning of the game: Joppa or one of the random village starts.

Joppa start

To begin, speak to Argyve (conversations) in the southwest corner of Joppa and accept the quest Fetch Argyve a Knickknack. As soon as this is complete, he will give the quest Fetch Argyve Another Knickknack, which has the same completion requirement. You can complete both without leaving if you have two artifacts to give him.

When you have completed these two quests, Argyve will make you his apprentice (incidentally allowing access to his chests.) He will then give you the quest Weirdwire Conduit.. Eureka!, which requires you to travel to the Rust Wells and retrieve a total of 200' of copper wire strands. When you turn in this quest, Argyve will reward you with a Joppa recoiler. When you speak to him next, he will give you a droid scrambler and stamped data disk, and start you on the quest A Canticle for Barathrum.

Once you have completed A Canticle for Barathrum by traveling to Grit Gate and delivering the stamped data disk at the communications panel, you will begin the main questline with More Than a Willing Spirit.

If Argyve dies before giving you the data disk, you cannot enter the main quest.

Random village start via village quest

If you choose one of the random village starts, the village elder will offer a quest that rewards you with "recoiler and disk". The recoiler, set to recall to that village, will be given to you when you complete the elder's quest. Optionally, you can also accept a stamped data disk after you turn in the quest, which will allow you to begin the quest A Signal in the Noise.

Random village start via the ruins of Joppa

In any non-Joppa start, you have the option to travel to the ruins of Joppa and retrieve the scratched data disk from a set of human remains where Argyve's house would normally be. The remains will also have a droid scrambler. Taking the scratched data disk to Grit Gate and activating the communications panel will give you a dialogue option to submit the disk and begin the main questline with More Than a Willing Spirit.
