An example of a tarry salt desert

A tarry biome is a biome that can occur in almost any location. It causes the zone in which it occurs to be covered in pools of asphalt. Tarry biomes do not override existing biomes, instead coinciding with them.

There are three different "intensities" of the tarry biome: the tar patch, the tar pools, and the flaming tar pits. These intensities usually occur in adjacent zones, with flaming tar pits often being bordered by tar pools, and tar pools by tar patches.

Intensities

Tar Patch

The tar patch is the first intensity of the tarry biome.

Tar patches are covered in pools of asphalt, and are also littered with 3-4 tar-encrusted bones.[1]

Zones that contain a tar patch will have "tarry" appended to the beginning of their names.[2]

Tar Pools

The tar pools are the second intensity of the tarry biome.

In addition to the pools of asphalt, tar pools will contain 4-5 tar-encrusted bones.[1]

Furthermore, creatures that spawn in the tar pools and possess at least one hand or an equivalent body part have a 25% chance of being kindlethumbed.[3] Such creatures will be colored red, will have Flaming Ray at mutation level 1, and will have "slimewalking". This property allows them to walk through asphalt or other sticky liquids without getting stuck, and allows them to walk over slippery liquids without slipping.[4]

Zones that contain tar pools will have "and tar pools" appended to the end of their names.[2]

Flaming Tar Pits

The flaming tar pits are the third intensity of the tarry biome. Parasangs that contain flaming tar pits will be logged in the Journal under "Natural Features" when encountered for the first time.

In addition to the pools of asphalt, flaming tar pits will contain 5-6 tar encrusted bones.[1] 2-3 random pools of asphalt will spawn on fire,[5] which will likely spread to the surrounding pools over time.

Furthermore, creatures that spawn in the flaming tar pits and possess at least one hand or an equivalent have a 50% chance of being firethumbed.[3] These creatures are almost identical to kindlethumbed creatures, but are colored bright red and possess Flaming Ray at mutation level 6.[6]

Finally, flaming tar pits will contain 3-4 fossilized remains. These remains, unlike normal corpses. act as containers that must be opened to access their contents. They will each contain at least 1 item from Artifact 4R, with a 25% chance of containing a second item.[1]

Zones that contain flaming tar pits will have "and flaming tar pits" appended to the end of their names.[2]

Like other surface zones, flaming tar pits do continue for some distance underground, so pull out your spiral borers for additional loot.
