A shrine is a kind of statue that can appear in procedurally generated ruins or other locations, which will include a depiction of a historic event from a random sultan's history. Looking at the shrine will add that snippet of sultan history to the Sultan Histories section of the journal. Shrines can not be set on fire, but they can be vaporized into lava at 1500°.[1]
Finding and looking at shrines is one method through which the player can expand their knowledge about sultan histories as well as historic sites.
There are options on a shrine's interaction menu to [P]ray or [D]esecrate.[1] These may be a part of randomly generated village quests. Aside from this, praying has no mechanical effect. Desecration of a statue will change its tile image to a black and red version[2], but otherwise also has no mechanical effect.
Sprites
During a single playthrough, each sultan will have a specific shrine image associated with them - all shrines that look the same will be associated with that sultan.[3] Resheph will always have the same statue across playthroughs.
There are 8 common shrine sprites (generally with a humanoid-like design) and 8 rare shrine sprites (generally with an animalistic design). The chance of a sultan having one of the 8 common sprites is about 11.4%, while the chance of having a rare sprite is about 1.1%.[3]
Guaranteed Locations
There are a few guaranteed shrines in the gameworld, including:
- Two in Joppa or the ruins of Joppa. One is in Joppa proper, which is always a statue of Resheph. The other is in Joppa's graveyard, one zone north of the village center, which will always have the location of the first historic site of the fifth period sultan.
- One in the shrine looked after by Tszappur, disciple of the Coiled Lamb in the Stiltgrounds, which will always reveal a bit of Resheph's lore.
- Six in the Court of the Sultans outside of Omonporch, including one for each of the six sultans.
