Looking is critical for success in Caves of Qud.

Looking at things is one of the most essential forms of interaction with the world. Almost everything you, the player, see can be comprehended in some greater capacity by fixing your gaze upon it.

History is relived by contemplating statues and engravings; loyalties are laid bare by looking upon creatures of great reknown. One may even unwittingly fall in love.

Almost every ordinary object has its own story to tell for those who choose to look. The words may struggle against comprehension, but for those who try to do so and succeed, the ultimate prize awaits: understanding of the world you exist in.

Mechanics

By default when using keyboard controls, press the L key to enter look mode. You can then scroll around using the same keys you use to move your character.

You can also select the "look" option from an object's interact menu to view its description.

Looking at a creature will tell you its name, description, approximate health, worn equipment, approximate difficulty rating relative to you, and its attitude toward you. If you have scanning, looking at appropriate objects will show you some additional information, such as exact ♥HP, ♦AV, and ○DV.

Simply looking at engraved or painted objects, shrines, village monuments, or even tattooed villagers can reveal village histories, sultan histories, and historical site locations.
